An open door to a stairwell in what could be a school or perhaps a hospital or some sort of office building strangely has a man with his back to the viewer hanging straight down from above. What is otherwise a completely normal situation has literally been turned upside down.
Inspired by a photograph I saw, it immediately brought to mind Jean Paul Sartre's play, "No Exit" and though the visual has no direct correlation to the play, other than the Exit sign, the starkness of everything and simillarity of the walls and door, lit by the neon stairwell light seemed like it's own kind of Hell in a way.
I consider myself to be a modern day surrealist, heavily influenced by my all-time favorite artist, Rene Magritte. I paint ideas. My goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With my paintings, you can always tell what's going on, you just don't necessarily know why. I want my paintings to tell stories that make you think. And if I can bring a smile to your face, that's even better. Enjoy! And please consider buying an item or two - they make excellent conversation starters!
