The thought behind this painting began with Magritte's classic, "This is not a pipe". My thought was I would do the same with a glass of milk and cookies. From there, things spun wildly out of control as I decided to put the cookies inside of a dessert container - and then, in classic Magritte style decided to make the cookies a framed picture - of what you would see if the framed picture were not there. Once I chose the path of realism, I moved forward and essentially re-created our kitchen - though I substituted fleckstone paint for our granite counter tops in the foreground. So the painting's title, which translates to, "These are not milk and cookies" is true to the original thought. But there's so much else going on in the painting that its meaning may not just be lost in translation, but in interpretation as well!
I consider myself to be a modern day surrealist, heavily influenced by my all-time favorite artist, Rene Magritte. I paint ideas. My goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With my paintings, you can always tell what's going on, you just don't necessarily know why. I want my paintings to tell stories that make you think. And if I can bring a smile to your face, that's even better. Enjoy! And please consider buying an item or two - they make excellent conversation starters!
