About Thomas Blood

Thomas Blood A self-taught, modern-day surrealist.

Most artists have had some degree of art training. Not Tom. His degree is in Journalism. He has spent his entire career creating advertising and marketing communications. Yet he has always had a love of art and as a Creative Director, understands design and all that goes into it.

In his early thirties, Tom began painting as a hobby and jumped in full force, working on large canvasses using an odd combination of air brush and acrylic paint. He had never used an air brush before yet learned the process and soon had a body of work that he took to a variety of St. Louis based art galleries. One of the galleries took a chance and gave Tom a solo show - and he sold six paintings in the process. He continued painting for fun and showing at different galleries in the St. Louis area but then had a 17-year hiatus when his painting room was turned into a downstairs bedroom.

Four Father's Days ago, his oldest son gave Tom two small canvasses and some acrylic paint and challenged him to paint again. That is now more than 40 paintings ago and Tom continues to pursue painting with a passion, trying to paint the impossible.

Tom has had a number of gallery shows in the St. Louis area, including a solo show of 30 of his works and has also received a Best of Show at an exhibit through MySLArt.org and numerous honorable mentions at other local shows.

He loves the work of Rene Magritte, the Belgian surrealist and explores many of his concepts in his own artwork. Other influential artists include Mark Kostabi, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and a wide assortment of other painters.

Tom invites you to explore his work, see how much fun they can be on some of the many items featured here and to consider buying an item or two.

Borrowing one of Tom's favorite phrases involving the creation of advertising and marketing communications, "In order to do the extraordinary, you must resist the ordinary."
